When you have teens and only a few minutes for the photoshoot, what do you do?
Go for a quick GHGH! (I make up my own terms - teehee!)
That's a Golden Hour Group Hug! 🤗
I've been photographing this family since Dani was a toddler and Charlie was a baby, so when we get together for their annual shoot, it's like we're continuing where we left off. No warming up needed! To start off, I tell them to do a group hug, and I get this gorgeousness below! OMG. I. Am. Done. 🎤 🥰
*PHOTOGRAPHY TIP* When is Golden Hour really?
"Golden Hour" is a general term to identify that glowy golden light before sunset. This can be 1 to 2 hours before sunset, and may not last that entire time.
Here's the thing, the sunset time is not always the same time the sunlight will actually disappear. Are there mountains, hills, tall trees, or buildings in your location? They can make Golden Hour much earlier. What is the weather like on that day, at that time? Clouds and fog can alter if you even get this light at all.
For example: In my Lifestyle Family Photography session last weekend, sunset time was "5:01pm" that day, but this glowy light only occurred for about 20 minutes around 4:05-4:25pm, and we had to chase the light by moving with the sun because of all the trees and buildings.
This family-walking photo above was the last shot I took, and you can see that the sun had already set behind the trees and the glowy light was gone.
Conclusion: Depending on what kind of vibe you want, keep location elements and weather factors in mind when you determine the shoot time and not just sunrise/sunset times.
